Extrait d'lettres d'Alger, 1863.

Manuscript narrative of Thibault's experiences as a French official in Algiers from August 1831 to May 1832. Composed from extracts of lengthy "journal letters" that Thibault sent to his wife during that time, the narrative contains detailed descriptions of Algerian life and customs, including discussion of the Berbers and the Bedouin; relations between the Algerians and the French soldiers and functionaries; the military situation, including the indiscipline of French troops, reports of atrocities and massacres by both sides, such as the return of French Chasseurs from an engagement carrying four severed heads; the venality and incompetence of members of the French administration; and diplomatic relations between the French and English in Algiers. Thibault concludes his narrative by stating that it was impossible for him to publish the journal, given its revelation of the incompetence and cruelty of the French occupation.
